What are knobbed cylinders in Montessori?
Knobbed cylinders are four wooden blocks, each holding ten cylinders with small knobs, varying in height, diameter or both. Children remove the cylinders and replace each in its own hole. They refine visual discrimination of dimension and strengthen the pincer grip used for writing. Each block has a built-in control of error.
What this means in practice
They are often one of the first sensorial materials, from about 2½ years.
The four blocks
- Block 1: diameter changes, height constant
- Block 2: diameter and height both decrease
- Block 3: diameter increases while height decreases
- Block 4: height changes, diameter constant
Indirect aim: writing
Holding the knob with thumb and two fingers prepares the hand for a pencil.
Practical next steps
- Present block 1 first.
- Model the three-finger grip.
- Allow repetition.
- Extend to two or more blocks together.
What to keep in mind
Cylinders are small; supervise very young children.
Common follow-up questions
