What is cosmic education in Montessori?

By APTTI Educational Content · Updated · 1 min read

Cosmic education is Montessori's approach for the 6–12 elementary years: giving children a big picture of the universe, the Earth, life and human history, and showing how everything is interconnected. It begins with dramatic 'Great Stories' and leads into research across science, history, geography and language.

What this means in practice

Although cosmic education belongs to elementary, 3–6 teachers lay the foundation through cultural studies: globes, maps, living things and simple science.

The Great Stories

  • The creation of the universe
  • The coming of life
  • The coming of humans
  • The story of writing
  • The story of numbers

Why it appeals to 6–12s

Children in the second plane ask 'why' and imagine beyond what they can see. Big stories feed that curiosity.

Practical next steps

  1. Learn the five Great Stories.
  2. Link 3–6 cultural work to them.
  3. Keep 3–6 work concrete.
  4. Read about elementary practice.
ExampleIn a 3–6 room, children sort pictures of living and non-living things, which later grows into the elementary study of life.

What to keep in mind

Don't give 3–6 children abstract cosmic lectures; keep it concrete.
