What is MACTE accreditation?
MACTE (Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education) is a US-based body that accredits Montessori teacher-education programmes against standards that include academic content, practicum and, typically, in-person components. It doesn't train teachers itself. Many AMS and some AMI programmes are MACTE-accredited, including centres outside the USA.
What this means in practice
MACTE accreditation is often requested by US schools and some international employers.
What MACTE checks
- Curriculum
- Faculty
- Practicum
- Assessment
- Programme administration
Online programmes
Fully online programmes without residency and practicum generally do not meet MACTE requirements.
Why this matters when choosing a course
If a job asks for MACTE, only a MACTE-accredited programme will do. If it doesn't, compare courses on content, assessment, cost and the evidence of acceptance in your target schools.
Practical next steps
- Check if employers need MACTE.
- Search MACTE's programme list.
- Compare costs.
- Decide.
What to keep in mind
APTTI's courses are not MACTE-accredited.
Common follow-up questions
