What is the Montessori curriculum for 3–6 years?
The Montessori 3–6 curriculum has five areas: practical life (everyday tasks), sensorial (refining the senses), language (spoken language, phonetic reading and writing), mathematics (numbers 1–10, decimal system, operations with concrete materials) and cultural studies (geography, science, history, art, music). Children move through each area at their own pace across three years.
What this means in practice
Each area has a sequence of materials; teachers track progress individually.
Typical progression by age
- Age 3: practical life, early sensorial, spoken language
- Age 4: sensorial, sandpaper letters, number rods
- Age 5–6: reading and writing, golden beads, cultural studies
Alignment with national frameworks
The 3–6 curriculum fits well with India's NCF for the Foundational Stage, the EYFS and similar play- and activity-based frameworks.
