Who was Maria Montessori?
Maria Montessori (31 August 1870 – 6 May 1952) was an Italian physician, educator and founder of the Montessori method. One of the first women to graduate in medicine in Italy (1896), she opened the first Casa dei Bambini in Rome in 1907, founded the Association Montessori Internationale in 1929, and lived and trained teachers in India from 1939 to the late 1940s.
What this means in practice
Montessori began with medicine and psychiatry, working with children with intellectual disabilities. Her success with them led her to apply the same scientific observation to typically developing children. The result was a method built on children's natural development rather than adult instruction.
