Can I do a Montessori course online?

By APTTI Educational Content · Updated · 1 min read

Yes. You can study Montessori teacher training online, as APTTI's Certificate (120 hours), Diploma (200 hours) and PG Diploma (240 hours) are. You learn the philosophy, materials and lesson planning through online modules, take MCQs and submit assignments. Online courses don't include a supervised in-person practicum, so add classroom experience if you can.

What this means in practice

Online study suits working adults, parents and people far from a training centre. The trade-off is that you must arrange your own hands-on practice.

What you can learn well online

  • Montessori philosophy and principles
  • Child development
  • The purpose and sequence of each material
  • Presentation steps (with videos and diagrams)
  • Observation and record-keeping
  • Lesson planning

What needs real practice

Handling the materials smoothly, managing a group of children and judging readiness come from practice. Volunteer in a Montessori classroom, work as an assistant, or practise at home with materials you make.

Recognition of online study

Many private preschools accept online Montessori certificates. Fully online programmes are not accredited by MACTE, and AMI and AMS courses include in-person components, so check what your target employer needs.

Practical next steps

  1. Check you meet the 10+2 requirement.
  2. Choose the Certificate, Diploma or PG Diploma.
  3. Plan around five hours of study a week.
  4. Arrange classroom practice alongside study.
ExampleGrace studies APTTI's Diploma online in Accra while volunteering two mornings a week at a Montessori nursery; she finishes with both a certificate and a portfolio.

What to keep in mind

If a job advert asks specifically for AMI, AMS or MACTE training, an online course will not meet it.

Common follow-up questions

Is an online Montessori course easier?

Not easier, but more flexible.

How do I practise presentations?

Make simple materials and practise with a child or in front of a mirror.
