What are the red rods in Montessori?
The red rods are ten red wooden rods increasing in length from 10 cm to 1 metre in 10 cm steps. Children arrange them from longest to shortest, learning to see differences in length. They prepare for the number rods, which are the same lengths but painted in alternating red and blue sections to show quantity.
What this means in practice
Carrying the longest rod also builds coordination and spatial awareness.
Purpose
- Visual discrimination of length
- Vocabulary: long, longer, longest
- Coordination and movement
- Preparation for number rods and measurement
Presentation tips
Carry rods vertically, holding each end. Build a 'stair' along one edge, aligned on the left.
Practical next steps
- Present with careful carrying.
- Align rods on one end.
- Use the three-period lesson.
- Lead to number rods.
What to keep in mind
Provide floor space; the longest rod needs room.
