What are dressing frames in Montessori?
Dressing frames are wooden frames with two fabric panels joined by one type of fastening (buttons, zips, snaps, buckles, laces, hooks, bows or safety pins). Children practise each fastening flat on a table before doing it on their own clothes. They are part of practical life and build independence, fine motor skills and concentration.
What this means in practice
Children usually start with large buttons or Velcro and progress to bows and laces.
Common frames
- Large and small buttons
- Zip
- Snaps / press studs
- Buckles
- Hook and eye
- Lacing
- Bow tying
- Safety pins
Why frames?
The frame holds the fabric still and in front of the child, isolating the movement.
Practical next steps
- Start with large buttons.
- Present slowly, one movement at a time.
- Let the child repeat.
- Transfer to real clothing.
What to keep in mind
Choose fastenings children actually wear in your region.
